Social Solidarity Center in Ain el-Helweh camp marks International Women’s Day

The Social Solidarity Center marked International Women’s Day by honoring a group of Palestinian women, refugees in Lebanon, for their years of service for the Palestinian people, in an event attended by representatives of Palestinian and Lebanese parties and civil society organizations in Ain el-Helweh refugee camp, which included a concert by a popular folk dance and song troupe.

Executive Director Sarah Nabil Mustafa spoke about the situation facing Arab women today, particularly Palestinian, Syrian and Iraqi women confronting persecution, war and occupation in their home countries, reviewing the lengthy struggle and deep sacrifices of Arab women in the struggle of their people.

She saluted the Palestinian woman, the heart of successive Palestinian intifadas, who have given many sacrifices and engaged in all aspects of struggles, from transferring arms and food to the front lines, providing medicine and care, and direct engagement in armed struggle, with such examples as Dalal al-Mughrabi, Wafa’ Idriss, Ayat al-Akhras and Reem al-Riyashi.

Hala Mahmoud Abu Salem spoke about the situation of Palestinian women, including their role in resisting the Nakba of 1948 and their role in resistance, including in occupied Palestine ’48, on Land Day on March 30, 1976, when women in Sakhnin and Arraba confronted Zionist occupation forces to defend their land.

She also emphasized the role of Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon, including in rebuilding Ain el-Helweh camp after the Israeli invasion, noting the persecution suffered by Palestinian women in Sabra and Shatila, Nabatiyeh, Tel al-Zaatar and Nahr el-Bared. She saluted the work of the imprisoned Khalida Jarrar, Leila Khaled, Taghreed al-Botmeh and numerous other women strugglers, emphasizing the necessity of the full equality and authority of women in all aspects of decision-making in the national struggle.

The event concluded with the honoring of a number of women by Adel Abu Salem, the chair of the Social Solidarity Center and Abdullah Dannan, the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in the area.
