Protests in Europe and North America demand justice for the martyr Omar Nayef Zayed

Protests and demonstrations in New York City; Hamburg and Berlin, Germany; and Sofia, Bulgaria demanded justice for Comrade Omar Nayef Zayed on the 40th day after his death inside the Palestinian embassy building in Sofia, where the comrade, a leader in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine who escaped Zionist imprisonment in 1990 and fled to Bulgaria, had sought refuge from a Zionist extradition attempt against him.

These protests came alongside planned events in Gaza and elsewhere in Palestine. In Sofia, members of Nayef Zayed’s family joined the Palestinian Community in Bulgaria in protesting outside the Palestinian embassy, burning a Zionist flag and photos of Ambassador Ahmad al-Madhbouh and Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki.

They demaded an end to security coordination with the occupation state and linked the death of Nayef Zayed with the ongoing practice of security coordination that causes the imprisonment and death of resistance strugglers in Palestine. Protesters demanded that the ambassador and the embassy’s security team be held accountable for his death.

In New York City, members and supporters of Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network protested outside the Bulgarian embassy, demanding a transparent, fair and speedy investigation into Nayef Zayed’s death and real accountability for those responsible, after which they marched to the Palestinian mission several blocks away.

Protesters were met by so-called “counterterrorism” police and a representative of the U.S. State Department on behalf of the Palestinian Authority mission, but continued to demonstrate, calling for justice for Palestine and for Omar Nayef Zayed.

In Hamburg, Germany, the Democratic Palestine Committees protested outside the Bulgarian Embassy, speaking about the death of Omar Nayef Zayed and demanding justice and accountability from Bulgarian officials in this case, emphasizing that Palestinians around the world and supporters of the Palestinian cause would continue to make demands of the Bulgarian state until there is real accountability for Nayef Zayed’s death.

In Berlin, Germany, the Democratic Palestine Committees convened a memorial and call to action for Nayef Zayed, with speakers from various Palestinian organizations and parties coming together to call for justice in his case and support the struggle of Palestinian former prisoners for justice.
