The Palestinian Cultural Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil marked the 40th anniversary of Land Day, with the participation of Palestinian, Arab and Brazilian activists and organizers.
Participants in the event included Brazilian political parties, civil society movements and government representatives, including school students, as well as a strong turnout of the Palestinian and Arab community in Sao Paulo.
The event, which began with the screening of a short film on Land Day and its history in 1976, followed with speeches from various Palestinian community institutions on the meaning of Land Day and the struggle for Palestine today.
Majed Abu Hasna, head of the Palestinian Cultural Center, spoke about the center’s history in the Palestinian community in Brazil.
Jadallah Safa, speaking on behalf of the Democratic Palestine Committees, spoke about the importance of rebuilding Palestinian institutions in the diaspora, underlining their role in representing the Palestinian people.
Mohob Matip spoke about the World Social Forum in Sao Paulo and the work of the WSF committee on migration, asylum and refugee rights, and the centrality of the Palestinian cause and the right of return in this context.
Dr. Jamila Latif of the union of Palestinian institutions condemned Israeli attacks on Palestinians and the escalating attacks on Palestinians in ’48 and new racist laws.
Socorro Gomes, president of the World Peace Council, spoke about the importance of building the international BDS campaign and the boycott of Israel.
Claude Hajjar, speaking on behalf of the Arab Progressive Framework, spoke about the importance of organizing and activating the Arab community, condemning sectarian division among Arabs in Iraq, Libya or Syria.
Palestinian ambassador Ibrahim Alzeben spoke at the event, noting the recent ill-treatment of a delegation fom the Communist Party of Brazil to Palestine, saying that this was an Israeli response to Brazil’s recognition of Palestine.
The event concluded with artistic performances, including Palestinian poetry and music as well as a Chilean band and performance, and Palestinian dabkeh.
